I have a 1983 35hp Johnson model number J35ECTS and would like to hook up a SS White 0-8000rpm tachometer. I'm hoping someone out there can let me know how many poles this model alternator has, the options on the back of the tach are 6,8,10,20.

if its a 3 wire rectifier set it for 12 poles or six pulses, if its a 4 wire rectifier set it for 10 poles or 5 pulses. then check the tach for accuarcy with an inductive pick up tach. most are close but occasionally they are in left field someplace.

Thanks for the quick replies, my rectifier has 4 wires so I'll set it to the 10 pole position and get it back in the water for a test. Back soon!

The 10 pole position worked great on the 83 35hp, I'm keeping my eye out for a handheld optical tach to check it's calibration. Thanks to all.
