I was wondering if anyone would please give me some advice. I have had the motor for 1 year and it has ran perfect. It has recently started to act like it is drowning out when it put it in the water. If i hook it up to the hose at the house it runs beautiful. but when it is in the water it sounds like it is drowning especially when you give it gas. thanks for any advice.it also seems to be leaking water out of the seam between the foot and the middle section. right above the 4 bolts that hold the bottom on.

Hi ya' timrrr...welcome!

Engines usually sound like they run great on muffs because they do....no backpressure against the cylinders. Putting the engine in the water creates backpressure that the cylinders have to overcome to exhuast.

Leaking at the seam is common when running on muffs and is nothing to worry about.

Have you made sure the fuel tank is venting? Primer bulb is OK?

Two things you need to do first is check the compression on each cylinder and check the spark on each cylinder.

The higher the compression the better and each cylinder should read within 10 to 15% of each other.

Spark should jump a 1/2 inch gap with a hot thick lighting like spark.

Also look at your fuel lines and make sure all connections are tight and all fuel lines are soft and plyable.

Give us an update as to when the last time the motor was serviced.

are you refering to the bulb used to prime the fuel. if so it does seem like it leeks a little. I thought it was from me squeezing it too much. caan i check the spark plugs by takeing them out and have them hooked to the wire and turn the engine over. I just replaced the spark plugs yesterday. how do you check the compression? thanks again for you help. tim

If the primer bulb is leaking, replace it.....better yet just replace the whole fuel line.

You can check the spark fairly easy. Cut the head off a nail and stick the nail in the spark plug wire. Hold the nail about 1/2" from a clean engine ground and have someone crank the engine. Be sure to use insulated pliers to hold the lead. You could get a nasty jolt.

You check compression with a compression gage....sold at any auto parts store.

As for the flat knob....don't have a clue.

One more thing....you shoud get a service manual. You can get the generics from here on iboats (see the bottom of the page) or for about the same price you can get a reprint of the OEM service manual from Ken Cook Co. or Marine.com. You can search them on line.

The flat knob is a tension adjust for the throttle. Turning it clockwise will increase tension and cc will decrease. It is basically there so that the throttle does not increase or decrease on it's own :).

Re: 1983 50 hp evinrude outboard

(cc == counter clockwise), It has nothing to do with the operation of the motor, it simply adds more tension to the throttle lever itself (makes it harder or easier to move).
