1983 50hp Johnson shift rod adjustment

Greetings. Can anyone tell me the way to adjust shift rod after water pump replacement? I still have the leg off. I had heard that there is a measurement from the plate to the hole on the top of the shift rod and that the rod can be screwed in or out a turn or two to make the adjustment.. I can't find it in my seloc manual. Also do you put it in neutral or reverse while taking the measurement. If there is another way please let me know.
