charging system is puting out 16-18 volts with multimeter hokked up, slowly rises, replaced rectifier, ttried different battery,<br />How high is too high, can this be dangerous, help please...

Welcome to the world of marine charging systems. Poor at best. It sounds like you have an unregulated charging system that is functioning as they do.<br />Voltage much higher than 17v can damage 12v electronics. There are several ways to address this. Install a generic regulator, or simply run with some accessories on. Add some running lites and switch them on as needed....
