I have an 83 evinrude 90 hp and am trying to figure out how to test the timer in it. It has been replaced with a new looking cdi timer, but my dad seems to think that's the problem. How can I test this before spending the money to buy a new one? Thank you for any help.

cdi electronics will have that info. Pull the flywheel both of my timer bases from cdi had a bulge in them that rubbed on the flywheel. No the bulge was not there when it went on.

What is your motor doing / not doing that leads you to believe the timer base is bad ?-------What other trouble shooting has been done if any ?----What are the results of a compression test ?

I'm sorry, I'm a newbie (and a girl) so I'm really trying to learn. The motor was given to me by my dad. His mechanic that works on his boat said that it was either the trigger or the stator that was bad. My dad bought a new boat and gave us the motor. When we try to start it all it will do is backfire. We bought a used trigger and stator from Ebay and put those on with no change I haven't done/don't know what a compression test is.

If all it does is backfire you need to check the flywheel key. You also need to make sure the coil wires are on the right plug. Orange wire with blue stripe goes to the top cylinder

I am not sure if the 1983 models used the orange / blue stripe format for the top coil.

Sucess!!! Coils were backwards. It stopped backfiring and started twice for about 10 seconds. As soon as my husband puts the fast idle lever down on the remote control it goes dead though.

Think it was old gas. After a few more times and playing with the choke it ran for a few minutes until we turned it off! Thank you so much for your help!

Update: we had the motor running again and when my husband went to turn if off the motor would not turn off. The key was out of the ignition and it was still running! He had to choke it out to get it to shut off. Any idea of what to look at now to solve this issue?
