I'm looking at a 83' Cobalt with a 350 Mercruzer 265. I haven't heard much about these boats. Any pros and cons would be a big help. Thanks.

Re: 1983 Cobalt

Cobalt's have a great reputation for high quality, but with a boat that old it is more about current condition than anything else.

350 Mercruzer 265
Need to double check that. I don't recall a 265, 260 yes, and 165, but not a 265 . . .

Re: 1983 Cobalt

i would try and get all the data you can on the boat-i bought a 1979 26' searay a couple of yrs. ago ,out of la cross wi.it came with all service records, engine data, records on outdrive, and new bunk style e-z loader trailer--it turned out to be a turn key and go--boat,but now i have to stay on top of it as best i can, small things like a gauge here ,switches, bad grounds. just typical old boat stuff, but for 5,000 total cost ,and 340 for fuel ,to go fetch it ,i think i did all right--just my thoughts

Re: 1983 Cobalt

Thanks. I currenly have a 78 Johnson 115 Hp outboard. It sits on a well taken care of 17' 78 Invader Deep V. The outboard is worn out.(Not too sure if I want to spend the money to rebuild) My parents have a 73 Ford Mercruiser 5.0 and had no problems. I was just wondering about the GM 5.7 Mercruiser?

QC you are correct it is the 260.

The 260 is very common, parts are readily available, well known by service people, bulletproof and upgradeable. Good platform.
