Over the years, through extensive use, a few pieces within the engine have broken and I've taken it upon myself to fix them this winter. I've been quite successful with fixing most of the pieces, but one in particular, what was a small red piece that seemed to stop the pull start has snapped off and the only way of reaching the screw to replace it seems to be to take off the flywheel. Now I've managed to take off the bolt on the top of the flywheel yet I'm still unable to remove the actual flywheel and was wondering if there is a lock or trick to getting it off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Silens and welcome to iboats.

No trick or hidden keys. What ya' need is called a harmonic puller. Simply put, it uses the three bolt holes in the top of the flywheel and pushes against the crankshaft to remove the flywheel. Don't try a gear puller as you could crack or break the flywheel.

Sometimes a little penetrating oil around where the driveshaft comes up through the flywheel helps also. Let it soak a while.

Don't hesitate to post if you have any more questions.....thanks.

If you unscrew the center bolt all the way out so no threads are engaged, you can sneak the starter in and out as a whole unit. Even though the bolt won't pass the flywheel by itself, if you leave it in the starter it can. But it's not easy handling it that way. It's much easier if the flywheel isn't there.

Yeah...Willy's got a point there...remove the recoil starter and just take the vertical throttle shaft off. Might be easier. But you would also have to let the recoil starter rope unwind so there is no tension on the recoil spring and putting the starter back on can be a deuce sometimes. Hmmmm....six of one and half dozen of the other. Maybe we otta stick with flywheel removal..... :) What ya' think Willy??

dothadewman, my understanding of the little red piece of which i have no idea what name it goes by, is that, with the help of a little spring, stops the engine from being started while the entire unit is in gear. It is(was in my case) located just below the flywheel near the recoil starter on the right front side of the engine(if you are looking at the front of the engine) Not essential, but i'm sure a safety must for those people who fail to make sure that the unit is in neutral before starting.

I personally leave the flywheel on, but I've been doing this for awhile. Keeping it together while wiggling and squeezing is kinda hard. And if that spring lets loose  ! Much easier with the flywheel off!

Leave the interlock lever on. It's an important safety feature. :)

I know what you mean. when i replaced it the first time, i threw the cup and spring (at the advice of the guy i was workign for at the time) and it went off like a shot. got a good 10ft in the air. a neat show, but i sure wouldn't want that to happen if i didn't expect it to...
