1983 Evinrude 70HP won't start when cold

My motor will not start when cold. I have had some success getting it to start by pulling the spark plugs and putting fuel directly into the cylinder. When it starts it runs great and will start even after being shut off. Once it sits over night it won't start again. The fuel system seems to hold prime and the choke solenoid/primer is putting gas to the carbs.

This spring putting gas in the cylinder worked and sometimes didn't work. I convinced my self I didn't have any spark and put a new power pack and it fired up so I thought I had found the problem......unfortunately the next time I tried to start the boat it wouldn't start.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks

Working on boat today and found it will start if you push throttle wide open. Once it starts it runs very rough and will only run at 1/2 to full throttle (will not idle). Pulled plugs and bottom plug was really oil soaked. Other two plugs look good. At one point I switched fuel sources (hooked up gas tank from my pontoon) and it ran good for about a minute then died. Had to follow above procedure to start and it ran as above. Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

bcbrad87,
When was or do you remember when the last time you had the carbs rebuilt or cleaned out really well. Your carbs might be in for a good ole soaking, blowing out all of the passageways kind of clean. I would do that before I started spending money in buying parts. Yeap, just take the carbs off and remove all of your gaskets and rubber/plastic parts and get you a can of gunk carb cleaner or similar carb cleaner

Thanks. I did clean the bottom carb and it didn't seem to make any difference. I should have noted that in my post. I may try to clean it again as I'm not real confident that I did a thorough job.

bcbrad87,
I would thoroughly clean both carbs out really well and take the red straw that comes with the carb spray cleaner and blow threw each and every passageway thoroughly and even take an air compressor if you have one and blow air through the passageways and the jets. It wouldn't hurt and it might make it run like new again. Just my two cents.

FYI.The problem turned out to be primer or choke solenoid. Not sure what it's called but it's the part with the red lever on it. 15 dollar part from iboats and the boat seems to be starting and running fine.
