Re: 1983 Evinrude - Add Tach
You need a tachometer that operates off of a six (6) pulse charging system (yours).
The tach will normally have four (4) wires.... Purple, Blue, Black, Gray.
Purple (12v) attaches to the "A" terminal of the ignition switch. (voltage applied only when key is ON).
Blue (light) attaches to your light switch. (Whatever terminal to have voltage applied only when switch is on)
Black (ground) attaches to any battery ground. (DO NOT attach this wire to either "M" terminal of the ignition switch!).
Gray (sensor) attaches to the Gray wire leading from the instrument cable. (cable that goes from the engine to the controls/dash/console).
If you find a tachometer that has the "Plug In Setup" and your control box has the "plug" connector on the control box just under the ignition key, OR has the plug hanging from the instrument cable under the console, then it's just a matter of plugging the tachometer in.
There will be a dial on the back of the tachometer... set it to number six (6)...... 6 pulses.
