Hello. I have an '83 Johnson 140hp v-4 that I am getting ready for the spring....I started it for the first time since last year and it's really smoking. It smells like an exhaust smoke, though. So, I syphoned all of the gas out this evening. Also, I replaced all of the spark plugs late last year (first time I've ran them). I haven't got to refill the tank yet, but is there anything else I can do to get it running smooth?? I've been reading a lot about carb cleaning and stuff, suggestions?? Thanks!!

ohy,

Where do I start?

If it were mine, I'd do these things.

1. Buy a manual.

See here:

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/manuals/

Best $30.00 you'll ever spend.

2. Add a water seprator to the fuel line.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...keywords=fuel+filters&submit.x=56&submit.y=13

3. If you do not know when the water pump impeller was replaced last-YOU'RE due.

4. If it's an oil injected model (sure it is) then drain/dump the old oil from the tank and refill using ONLY a good TCW-3 rated outboard oil. Note: Mix the fuel 50:1 with outboard oil until you can mke certain that the oil injection is working; read-using oil.

5. Drain and refill the lower unit using a good lower unit fluid (OMC/Bombardier) preffered. Make sure to replace the lower unit drain/fill plug gaskets. Cheap insurance.
