sorry for starting another thread but its a completely different topic. i understand in the 80s the rating was changed bc of discrepancies in how manufacturers rated their motors. i have a 1983 175 johnson

j175txctd
j5854054

and would like to know if this is a 175 by today's standards (prop rated), or if this was rated for 175 at the crank. thanks

'83 should be prop rpop rated, not sure when that actually went into affect but I think it was late late 70's.

That would be great. I had heard late 70s for merc and 82-83 for johnson/evirude. Just hoping someone might know for sure w model and serial info. Thanks

Not trying to start a fight but........ the head rating was 1983 and earlier and the prop rating was 1984 and later. I had confirmed that years ago and of couse when I was shopping for a new V-4 I ended up with a 1983 ;)

Do you mind me asking where you confirmed those years? I have heard varying engines in the 82-84 years were prop or crank rated. Just trying to see if it can be confirmed w the model # and serial # provided. Would suck if this is crank rated but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

I had contacted a design engineer from Johnson/Evinrude by phone. There used to be one here on iboats but he has long since left.

There you go, I knew it was right in that time period.

Yup by the 1984 model year all OMCs were prop rated. I too have heard rumors that some of the '83s were as well. Dunno if they're true or not but I've got a '83 140 that runs like a scalded dog.

Omc started to prop rate in 1985. The V4 crossflows became prop rated in 1985. Not all OMC motors changed in 85 but the V4 crossflows did. In 1986 the V6s changed to prop rating. In 1984 they still were rating at the crank

Mercury started prop rating their inline sixes and V6s in 1981 and by 1984, almost the entire line was prop rated.
