Does anyone have the specific information on Checking and Performing a Timing service on a 1983 Johnson 50hp 2 stroke.

50TELCTA is the specific.

I searched the forums with no Avail, I have not found anything specific to my motor with values to the Timing procedure itself.

timing really doesn't change unless you moved the spark advance stop, look in TOP SECRET files top page of this forum

I believe someone put in a new stator at some point and may have it off a little.

more or less just trying to check it due to no other reasons for my motor to be acting up.

everything new, took off reed valves at this point to check them and they were good. Ohm tested everything. New parts everywhere. No different.

random large miss at idle and what seems to be a minor miss when under throttle.

Hmm if I might ask, what would you think would cause a large misfire once every 20seconds that reduces the rpms at idle down to almost a stall in 1 split second but the motor recovers immediately and continues running as it was, then in 20 seconds it repeats and so forth.

the misfire is instant, it does not flutter, it's like a giant Chug.

throttle response is immediate up to very fast rpms with no sluggishness, With a single pop backfire on a quick return of the throttle to idle.

Sounds like it is running a bit lean on one cylinder.-----Or throttle plates are opening too early.

That's what I'm starting to think, it's like a Sneeze the way it chugs carbs are clean as a whistle, I took out the reeds today and those all looked great. I'm thinking the cam is to tight against the throttle roller possibly.

So I went out adjusted the carbs and the sneeze is gone. I went to set the idle screw and I used my fluke with attachment to get rpms.

it jumps between 800-1500 on the top cylinder the bottom one is more consistent around 800-1100 is that normal? Or is my top Cylinder having a problem still? The linkage between the carbs to "Sync" them has a little bit of slack in it.

I plan on putting it in the lake for more proper adjusting but for now I'm content with close.

Does your fluke attachment hang down by any chance? If you hang the timing lite clamp off of the wire there is a good chance it will pick up the lower cylinder also.

I picked the middle of the wire to place the sensor and moved it as far upwards away from the lower plug and boot but I wonder if the wire from my reader might have ended up being close to a coil now that you mention it. I will run a second check after dinner here in 30mins or so.

let's say it wasnt getting any interference, what would an erratic reading like that point towards??

cause my idle is not very "Steady" seems like it has some Lope like an 350 with a hot cam.

I think I'm going to record it and put a link to a YouTube video during the run after dinner if that is okay. Or any other way to add a video.

If you are testing this while running on muffs don't. Your motor needs to be running in gear and warmed up on the lake to set the idle
