We have a 1983 Johnson 70 HP (J70ELCTE) I had just rebuilt the gearcase as the clutch dogs and gears were shot.
After reassembling everything and adjusting linkages and such, the motor seems to run great. Excellent water circulation, No misses, idles nicely and shifts smoothly.
Everything is great until it is put into gear and under a load. (I should mention that all adjustments have been made with the boat in the water) Anyways, when the motor is put into gear and throttle is applied, once the timing advance hits full advance and the carbs start to open is when the thing starts to bogg down. it does not do this unless under a load. I took it out yesterday to test the lower unit and was able to get to full WOT but only for a brief time. The motor then slowly revved down as if running out of fuel and died. I opened the vent on the fuel tank and was able to re-fire the engine and hit WOT once again but again only for a short time appx 5 min.
I have noticed that if I hit the choke (push the key in) it will pick up rpm's and i can slowly achieve WOT. However this is a rental boat and I need it to do what it is supposed to, when it is supposed to do it, as most of the people who rent it don't know an outboard from a surfboard. Any suggestions? (no I have not cleaned the carbs yet) REALLY REALLY NEED THIS BOAT UP AND RUNNING THIS WKND
Thanks in advance .
