rebuild the carb, do a compression and leak down check, replace the lower end unit oil, replace the spark plugs, and inspect the wires. . . just for starters

No offense but if you're that unsure about the motor I'd suggest taking it it a trusted tech. Cleaning the carbs and changing the lower unit oil is relatively easy but can lead to an expensive lesson if done incorrectly. Where are you located? Maybe we can help steer you to a good shop. Just hate to see you get disapointed on your first rig.

Jeeeeze- Put some fresh gas in the puppy & start it before you start tearing it apart  It might be fine-- Then do some maintenence

And that is a good way to potentially fry your motor.

too true, all it takes is a bit of fluff in a carb jet and result in a melted piston.

But you CAN do it all yourself if you educate yourself first before leaping in and pulling anything apart. Get a "jean you whine" factory manual.!

I'd spark test and compression check it before buying parts.

Heres a lower gear oil change, pay close attention, use new seals on screws.
You may need a small impact screwdriver from sears $20, to loosen the drain screws. The type of impacter that you tap with a hammer.

carb rebuild, use rebuild kits and only do one at a time, don't pull all the carbs at once and dismantle them.

Guess i'm way lost here:confused:
You're all saying when you go to look at a used boat & motor you should not try to start it before you buy it??
Or if you don'nt listen to it run before you buy it just take it home & start tearing it down before you even attempt to start it to see if it's good to go?
I just bought a 23 yr old boat & motor that had sat for 2 yrs (according to seller) but i sure wanted to hear it start (& did) before i paid
Took it to the lake & saw it ran crappy so THEN i tore into it :D

when i bought my 82 90hp evinrude the owner and me did a compression test and then he helped me put it on the boat(help to have a personal forklift)but as for testing etc i did that on my own.made sure the lower unit was full of fresh oil and that she pumped water real good.that was five trouble free years ago!ive since rebuilt the carbs which was actually unneeded since the darn things were spotless and bought a impeller to put in that is still sitting on the shelf as the one that was in there was mint.my motor sat in a corner of the local firedept for 8 years before i bought it also.but yes i would not buy a boatmotor i couldnt here run or wasnt absolutly confident i could get running.:)
