Can anyone help me with some history? I am looking at a 90 hp Johnson (1983) and the seller says it has a commercial block...what exactly does that mean? Any performance differences?

Re: 1983 Johnson 90

I know that there are some motors that have a "Commercial" letter in the model number, here is a chart that explains the codes..I am not sure exactly what the differences are, I had always though commercial motors came with heaver duty gear cases, but there are 4 different commercial designations listed below..hope this helps some.

Re: 1983 Johnson 90

In my service manual, there are certain differences i have noticed. in my '87 90hp, there is a spaghetti seal where the crankcases meet, that was the biggest difference i saw. I think they are meant to be robust and easily rebuildable.

I have that motor, not commercial though, it's a torque monster and ultra reliable, hasn't let me down in 4 years.

Re: 1983 Johnson 90

My commercial duty does have the spagetti seals between the crank halves. Also I think the gearcase on my 100hp v4 commercial was originally a V6 gearcase. I don't know if any of the hardware was SS but if someone does know please post other differences you know.

Re: 1983 Johnson 90

I've noticed in my manual a few minor differences such as fuel filters, 89 60hp. the differences look to be better on the commercial motor
