I bought this motor as a parts motor for literally next to nothing. In the interest of learning I checked the plugs. One looked like this. 20240102_065409.jpg

It is from cylinder 1. I then put an endoscope in and removed that bypass cover. The top of the piston was clean comapred to the other 3 (metallic grey as opposed to light brown residue on other three). On the edge of the top of the piston there appears to be chips or flakes that have come off. No obvious severe scoring on the cylinder walls. Rings intact. What is the likely cause? Is it likely water in the cylinder from blown head gasket? I'm guessing that even if the compression is good that its unlikely it would ever run properly again without a new piston in that hole. Just want to be sure its no good before I rip the motor down.

That is melted bits of piston in the plug

Most likely ran lean

Not maintaining the fuel system will kill a motor

Ran very hot.---Poor quality / quantity of oil.-----Too big a prop.----Carburetor jet plugged.----Water pump in poor condition.----Water diverters out of place and blocking cooling water flow.----Timing too far advanced ----Sheared flywheel key.----There are so many things that need to be checked on a simple 2 stroke.
