How do I turn the shift cam to be in the right position to insert the shift rod. It seems to be held in place by a pin.
The shift cam and hole in the casting above the cam do not line up.

Also what gear should the shift lever be in for reassembly ?

Re: 1983 johnson lower case shift cam question

Exactly the same as my '84 6hp. I dont remember any problems with that.

Referring to the diagram below

The shift rod is held captive in the gear case cover #25 by the clip #32.
so fit the shift rod to the cover ( using a new O ring #28) and then fit the clip.
As you refit the gear case cover c/w shift rod you should be able to align the
shift rod with the cam #29 irrespecive of the gear engaged. Perhaps easier if
turned to forward gear position but I don't remember that being necessary.
(you will be using a new gasket #14 and presumably you have fitted new seals #27)

Like wise I dont remember any particular gear being necessary when refitting
the gear case assembly except that the shift lever must be set to the same gear as the gear case.

Putting it in forward gear should relieve the pressure of the spring #10 and
the plunger #33 on the cam so do it all in forward gear... I don't remember it
being necessary but I may have done it like that without really thinking about
it.
