I have a 150HP Johnson outboard on a boat we
were recently given... first boat for us.

I wanted to know if this V6 two-cycle outboard
has an alternator in it or just a rectifier?

Also, how useful are the service manuals for
someone who can figure things out easily, but
doesn't really work on motors much?

Thanks in advance...

Re: 1983 Johnson Outboard question

Hi USC, welcome to IBOATS, it's awesome.

I have a 1983 200 hp. I believe mine only has a rectifier, but the experts should be able to help more.

As for the manual, I am an outboard rookie myself and bought the SELOC manual. It is ok, but can be pretty confusing at times b/c it represents too many different motors. If I were to do it over again, I would buy the OMC Service Manual.

Check out these links for a manual:
The Outboard Wizard
MasterTech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook

Re: 1983 Johnson Outboard question

Welcome!!

All E/J 150's have battery charging components. Its part of the stator -- coils up under the flywheel. The stator also supplies the initial "juice" for the ignition.

All 150's have a rectifier. Some have a regulator / rectifier. Once you get the manual it will show pics of both.

Good luck!

Re: 1983 Johnson Outboard question

I was asking because my brother mentioned that
those instant-jump booster packs for dead
batteries could damage a rectifier if you start
your boat a lot with one.

My battery was dead one day from leaving the dash
lights on over the course of the week and I used
the jump pack to start the boat 4-5 times that day.

Just curious how much damage one of those things
could do to the engine.

Thanks for the advice... boating can be one problem after another sometimes.

I'll probably pick up the OMC specific manual.

If you jump start it without crossing the wires it should be OK. However it should charge the battery once you get it running.
