1983 Mercury 9.8 no spark... help with identifying problem?

I bought a 1983 Mercury 9.8hp (6263943) thats been sitting in storage for many years. I have had no success getting a spark when trying to start her up!

Besides disconnected/corroded stop switch wires when I got the motor, all wiring seems in good shape. I replaced the stop switch wiring and bought a new stop switch, and replaced the spark plugs, but still have no spark.

I tested the ring terminals that go to the ignition coils with a multimeter... when I pull the rope, I get a reading of about 180-190v on the terminals. However, it is not constant- it jumps up to about 180v and then falls back to 0 slowly. Is this what should be happening, or should the voltage be constant? Could this point towards a faulty switchbox?

When testing the coils individually, I have no resistance reading when inserting one of the multimeter ends into the opening for the cable and touching one to the leads on top of the coil. The coils do have some small cracks in them. Could these be the problem?

Any help is greatly appreciated!! I have lots of time and am open to all suggestions!! Thank you.

if your coils are cracked, replace them

Okay, I will do that. Thank you! So is the burst of voltage I am reading on the multimeter when i pull the cord normal, or should it be a constant reading?

Although you have a perceived electrical problem, the answer to your question is best found in the MERCURY forum. This forum is for general "boat" electrical.
