1983 thundercraft 470merc 170hp charging problem

i just bought a 1983 thundercraft 470merc cruiser 170hp the previous owner said the voltage regulator does not work it over charges battery i'm new to merc motors does anybody know of a alternative on replacing or do i buy another voltage regulator. the previous owner was talking about an alternator and other parts instead of voltage regulator

i hope this makes sense

I converted my 170 to an alternator and it was the best upgrade on the boat. Look for a kit or you can get a bracket kit and a marine one wire alt. BTW, you posted in the outboard section. A nice mod will be by to move you over to the I/O section. Don't let the 470 haters get you down, I had a blast with mine and it was fine. Just keep an eye out for the pump seals and you may need to go to the 4" exchanger.
