Hi, I am working on a 115 that had a water in the fuel problem. After going thru carbs and system to clean, I have no spark on 5 and intermittent spark on 1. The coils ohm out ok, I found that the starter had been changed last year, and when it was mounted the trigger wires for the top switch box where pinched hard between starter and switch box bracket. The white and the brown wire looked to have shorted on the bracket. If this ocurred would it kill the switch box, and could it damage the trigger?
Thanks.

Hi Spucky,

The trapped wires (shorted to ground) shouldn't have damaged the switchbox or the trigger. Just check that the wires aren't broken.

Chris............

I did strip the insulation which was cut, the wire itself was flattened but intact. Engine has good compression, new surface gap NGK's. I attempted to ohm test the trigger per seloc manual, wires were removed from switch boxes but cant get a reading. ( open ) May be the meter, tried on a couple of scales. If I run it under a load it will intermittently pick up a cyl for a second then drop it again.

sounds like an open circuit somewhere. are you aware that the triggers are 'paired'?

Chris, thanks for the replies and the more detailed schematic than I have. Yes I was crossing the upper wires with the lower on the trigger check. I will try another meter, the manual I have states 1100 to 1400 ohms for a trigger value. The engine is on a 21' party barge and is a pain to work on in water. Its also 1 1/2 hours away, he is going to pull it out and bring it down here on the trailer. I will pick this up when I get it here. Does that trigger resistance value sound right?
Skip

Skip,

I can't help you with the resistance as I never bothered measuring it. I have a DVA meter and measure the trigger output voltage when the engine is running.

Chris............
