I have a 1984 115hp in line 6 cylinder Mercury. I have not had it on the water yet but when on muffs it won't shift out of forward, how do i adjust this? What other maintenance should I preform before taking her out?

The only experience i have with boat motors is my 55hp chrysler which i did all the work on my self, any help is appreciated!

Also- does anyone have a PDF version of this manual they can provide me with or know where I can get one?

Thanks,
Jon

Jon, Those motors usually have a MerControl with a single tall throttle/shift lever and a shorter cold start lever. If you have this type, the throttle/shift lever should be in the 12 o'clock position to be in neutral. Forward is moving the handle forward, reverse is pullig the handle backwards. The motor should also not crank in forward or reverse gear.

Remove the wrap cowling and look on the port side of the motor where the control cables attach. The bottom cable is the shift cable. It is attached to a slider which slides on a track. Neutral is aprox. in the center of the track. You might move the throttle/shift lever from the neutral positon to the forward and reverse position and see if it moves, as you change gears.

Perhaps your shift cable is broken?

When you start it is it in neutral?
After shifting to forward will it not come back to neutral?
Chris1956 may be pointing you in the right direction.
The water muffs may not be playing a role.
