HI
Just got myself a winter project its a 1985 fletcher 160 with a 1984Mariner 115hp (6cy). Engine will only start with lot of throttel and then runs very smokey when you cut it back.

First off get a manual, it will help answer a lot of your questions. There are a lot of people here that can help but you need to state your problem with an actual question.

You probably have the engine running too rich if the smoke is excessive. This is a 2 stroke so it's going to smoke on muffs. Does it stall? You could also be burning off de-carb oil from when it was stored. Have you run at WOT in a lake yet?

Hey J, that motor will smoke a lot if there is a tear in the fuel pump diaghram. They also bog and load up at idle and take a while to clear up as you throttle up.

You might rebuild the fuel pump to remedy this issue.

Charlie, The motor will not smoke more or less on the flusher device. It will look like more smoke, since none is buried in the water.

That makes sense -- I was referring to the comment above:

"This is a 2 stroke so it's going to smoke on muffs"

I guess really it means "you will see more smoke on muffs because the motor is out of the water"

Right?
