i have a 1984 15 hp johnson serial#e5896921 bought for me when i was 13 and have a reel attachment to the boat it set in the garage for all most 12 years here recently i pulled it out and decided to get it going again so i started with the basics...cleanin carb and impeller, spark plugs and pull rope. put it on boat and was runnin fine exept for idle so took carb apart and cleaned it again and again ran fine till the impeller tore apart it ran hot for a min or two then shut it down freind said i put the impeller in backwards witch i dont thinki did. know i am doubing my self on with was the splines on impeller go any help on that would be apreciated....... another problem is the tiller it starting to strip out. after it run hot i took the moter off the boat and my nephew was twisting the tiller and i think it knoced it out of timing cause now it wont start unless i hole the carb almost all the way open and wont run unless i keep it reved up alot. so i need to know how to get it back in timeing and how to fix tiller arm from doing it again.thanks to anyone who helps

If the gears in the tiller arm are worn or loose you can jump a cog and get the handle out of sync with the engine so that it won't get full throttle. This happened to me 20 years ago so I'm doing this from memory. Check the gears in your tiller handle when the tiller arm is up and i think you can see how the gears might jump. You may need a new gear shaft in the tiller arm.

I am assuming that after 12 years you didn't just clean the impeller but put in a new one. I wouldn't expect a new impeller to self destruct so soon unless you had the vanes pointing the wrong way or you were running it dry. Do it again, lube the pump during installation, and rotate the drive shaft in the direction it runs while you install the impeller in its housing. Check that the housing is in good shape before you reuse it. Check thermostat also, after 12 years it may have frozen shut.

thank you for your response and the impeller i used was one i had bought new about 5 years ago and never got to puting it in i soaked it in lube for a couple of hours befor i put it in just think it was dryroted from sittin.and i put it in the right way thought thats how you put it in but only takes one doubter to get you thinkin. and if i get the splines on the tiller arm matched again is that gonna put it in timing or do i have to do something else? thanks for your reply and have a great day.

There's no timing adjustment on this motor. I believe that when you get your tiller gear fixed, you'll be OK. I've broken teeth off in mine too.
