84 Johnson 15hp SeaHorse needs thermostat changed out. But I cannot easily remove cylinder head cover due to engine case/cover bottom being so close. Manual does not show how to remove lower cover. I see what looks like 3 rubber motor mounts deep under engine. Any help is appreciated.

No need to remove the cover, just the cover latch.
A bit tight, but no big problem.

yes first you need to unscreav cover latch.
hold latch handle and pull out while unscreving bolt.
when you take uth latch(nandle, hook, and bolt) there will be enough space to unscreav all bolts from termostat cover.
But while puting back all things(termostat+spring+gasket+termostat cover)its a litle dificult.
i played with puting back almost 1 hour and quite.
just puled of whole head, mount termostat with cober and bolt back the head.

now i'm working with 15hp made in 79' and there is no spring on termostat, and i think in this case itse easier to bolt back termostat cover becouse just place termostat, slide in termostat cover with 1 lower bolt and tilt cover but first put some silicone on gasket to stick on head surface
