When I run the motor in the yard, it goes in both forwad and reverse real easy, but when I try to unload it off the trailer, it makes a grinding sound and will not go into reverse. I even tried to put it into reverse in the middle of the water and it still does not work. I tried adjusting the cables inside the motor, but it still does the same thing. Do you have any suggestions? Is there something I should try to adjust or should I take it to a shop? You can email me at SK8676@cs.com. SK8676@cs.com

Shay, no one else has answered so I'll wade in. Try disconnecting the shift cable at the engine, then try shifting it by hand with the shifting arm; if it dosn't go in gear this way you will probly have to drop the gear case and go into it.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I worked on it last night and found that it will shift by hand, so I tried adjusting the cable. The problem now is that I can get it to go in forward or reverse, but not both. I tried adjusting the cable several differnt ways, but it just doesen't engage the opposite gear all the way. Is there a tension adjustment in the control box?

Hi, Is the control box an OMC control box or is it an aftermarket unit. Some after market units, have to be adjusted. If it's an OMC unit, it should be pre-set to work properly.

If the waterpump was just chnged, the shift rod may be out of adjustment, When you adjust the shift cable, move control handle 3/4 to full throttle, shift gear case into farward gear, pull all slack from cable, adjust cable trunnion until cable end will slip over lever stud, Shift into neutral and reverse to verify shifting, turn prop when shifting to align clutch dog. If it still dosent have a reverse, repair time.

Shay,
If you are sure you can select forward & reverse manually then take the control box apart and make sure everything is OK at that end. The only other possibility is the shift cable may have too much backlash and will need replacing.

Have you put the boat in the water again and tried to shift manually just to prove the gearbox is OK?

I have the service manual and parts catalog for your motor which you are welcome to if you don't already have them.
Send me an e-mail to jandpbutler@mexis.com with your address and I will drop it in the mail for you.

Peter

Well, I thought I had the problem solved, but when I took my boat out this weekend, I had the same problem, NO REVERSE! This time I worked on it in the water and noticed that when I try to put it in reverse the shift linkage just bounces up and down and won't engage. I tried to force it into gear, but it just bounces out. What now?

HI again, It sounds like your problem is inside the gearcase. There is a part for the shift (Cradle) that is made of an aluminum type metal. I have seen this piece get worn and it will not go into both gears. That's where I think your going to end up going.

You should be able to pull prop shaft bearing carrier and reverse gear without removing gear case, take a look at the shift dog, you can see the reverse side of the clutch dog, the square edges of the dogs, will be rounding off, will not hold in gear.It problem is going into gear, but kicking back out of reverse.

Is there and acess plate that you can see this from? I think that is the problem. I called around to see how much it would cost to fix it and I was told around $700. I am a mechanic, but I never worked on a outboard motor before. How hard is this to replace?

No plate, the only hard part is removing the 2 snap rings, you need the giant pair of snap ring pliers that Snap-on sales, and a socket that will fit the drive shaft splines to torque the pinion nut.
