I'm trying to find a way to install an tempature alarm, when I checked with the dealer that said the 84-86 mercury only have a sensor without switching capabilities.
Has anybody found a way to install a tempature alarm on the older modles?

My current gague works fine, but I'm not alway whatching it.

Thanks for your help.

You can have the sensor ground the coil of a 12v relay. The sensor has continuity to ground when it gets too hot is all.

You can then have the relay trigger whatever you want like a hot horn and / or engine kill.

Thanks Rick & -W,

I assume the resitance on the senor wire will vary as the tempature rises, by the time the wire reaches a full ground to activate the relay will the engine already be hot?
I think this motor is designed to run about 140 degrees, I guess I could test it to see when the relay coil activate.

Thanks agian.

try the temp switch from a 70-late 80's chysler outboard. most were set to close around 180* and it threads into a 1/4x20 hole.
