1984 25 hp Rewind starter problems.

I broke the rope on my rewind starter. I put a new rope on and tried pulling. There was no resistance. I was wondering if I didn't rewind it enough. So I pulled it further apart. and the spring sprung. (see picture). Anyone have any advice on how to put it back together? I have a repair manual but there is nothing in there about this. I should have taken pictures before I pulled it apart.

Some people would straighten the spring and reuse it, and it probably will work. It also probably will break in the near future. Best to replace it.

BTW, that is what happens when the rope breaks. The pulley goes flying back and causes a backlash like a casting reel. Be real careful when you wind the replacement spring or it will get away from you and do it again.
