I have a 1984 / 1985 5 hp Sears Gamefisher that starts and runs great through all the RPM ranges in neutral but will only run in the idle position once shifted into the forward gear. Once I shift it from neutral to forward, it runs good as long as i leave it in idle position but stumbles and dies once I give it any throttle. I can give it throttle and back it off all I want in neutral and no problems until I shift it forward. Any ideas??

I'm not familiar with the Sears Gamefisher other than I believe it's a Tecumseh. In general, I've experienced similar problems with other motors and the symptoms are similar; and it's usually either ignition or fuel. Is it a one or two cylinder? If it's a two cylinder it may be running on one cylinder. Many motors will seem to run fine on one cylinder until they're under load. If it's a one cylinder it could still be ignition such as a bad coil. Once again it could run at idle but die under load. If it's fuel you can try a bit of choke as you accelerate or give it shot of starting fluid as you accelerate. If either of those tends to help it's not getting enough fuel. Could be the fuel pump (if it has one) or the carb needs attention. Good luck!

Ok lets do it right, get a copy of the tecumseh engine/carb manual, order the parts you need then rebuild the carb completely including fuel pump bladder, check the float setting and adjust as nessesary, re set the idle adjustment needle to spec, replace the fuel line or lines, pull the flywheel and follow the tecumseh carb/engine manual to re sync the carb to the stator cam. If its a model with points replace those and the condenser, oil the wiper then put it all back together and go fishing.

Edit:, and get a new spark plug, RJ12C or the RJ14YC...I like the 12's

if you do a search for the tecumseh engine manual you should find a pdf link for it here or on the web someplace.

Thanks for the quick replies....found the manual you mentioned and ordered the parts. I'll post my results once I "getterdone".
