I've got a 1984 60hp Evinrude on a 1985 McKeeCraft and the performance just doesn't seem right.

Shouldn't I be getting 40+ mph? With a light load, 31-32 is maxxed out. I pull skiers up with no problem, but it doesn't jerk anybody out of the water.
I'm looking at the high speed jets and find they went from a 56D to a 51D in 1985. How would I find if a service bulletin may have changed that? The engine runs really cool, even at 95 degrees in Chokoloskee.

I should mentioned the boat is 14' and I have removed a good bit of weight; specifically the 80lb foredeck (cooler lid) has been replaced with 3/8" plywood, the seats replaced with a cooler, aftermarket tilt, etc. The 14' Custom Deluxe 2002 model boasts 665lbs dry weight. The Evinrude model number is E60TLCRE.

Any pointers will be appreciated!

Thanks

jim

Jim@Ksc, what is your Rpms at WOT.Your motor if propped corrctly should be able to turn 6000 with light load on 14ft Mckee. Also, what means are you using to calculate mph? I don't believe I've ever owned an OMC speedometer that was accurate.Too many quirks with pitot tube placement and restrictions.

ob -

Thanks for the quick reply; I was still logged in.

I don't know lately, but I believe the last time I checked it ran 5600. If given the chance, I'll look tomorrow.

Speed is from a Garmin GPS, and as accurate as you can get.

j

Jim, what pitch prop are you running? I had a setup real similar to what you run, and when new, got right at 40MPH at WOT @6000 rpm.w/17'pitch prop.83 60 hp evinrude on 15 ft sport boston whaler. Two things to consider if you want to squeeze max from set-up.Motor height placement on transom should allow cavitation plate to be at or near surface of water when planing.Set as high as possible without cavitation at 1/2 throttle on plane in tight turn.Next, insure your throttle plates are opening to full horizontal at Wot position of throttle lever and are synchronized.

Re: 1984 60hp Evinrude performance

The SS prop is marked 11 ¾ X 17 and has a slight cup. There is less than 1” clearance to the bottom of the cavitation plate, so max diameter would be less than 13.5”.

I don’t have a tach (where would you put it?), but I can take a handheld.

Tilt and trim is CMC PT-130 aftermarket, so there’s a 6” setback.

With a little bit of slop at more than half throttle (and pulling two tubers), slight ventilation occurs. Other than getting airborne (darn sandbars!), I don’t ventilate unless I’m pulling something or it gets real sloppy.

I’ve checked timing, carb synchronization, WOT throttle position, all per specs (I have both Clymer’s and the Evinrude shop manual). Compression is 128 upper, 134 lower.

I have NGK B7HS10 plugs, but they come out wet and oily. Perhaps there’s a better recommendation out there?

There's still a question in my mind about the high speed jets; see first post.

Again, thanks for the attention!

Jim@KSC,Don't know of service bulliten on high speed jets, however changeout is a snap and if you want to experiment with ones of different size they're cheap.First things first ,it is imperative that you know what rpms motor is capable of.You can use a portable tach to determine or install permanent OMC tach.Instructions for installation are in box. Also, don't know when carbs were last cleaned insuring that bowl pickup tubes and fixed orifices are not restricted with gummy deposits which would also effect the performance of motor.

Go to:
www.tinytach.com
and pick up one of their $30 tachs. You gotta have a tach.

c/6

Hooty

Re: 1984 60hp Evinrude performance

Carbs were cleaned and rebuilt, personally (now that may be a problem!). I may pull them down again and look for trash, ob.

That's where, upon screwing up the float bowl, I noticed the replacement high speed jet was slightly smaller than the installed one. It led me to questions.

Turns out our marine shop is still using her original microfich, with no service bulletin updates.

Another jet from the same shop was identical, and still smaller than the installed one.

I have two new high speed jets installed, but have only run it in the back yard, where it doesn't show a problem.

Really good clue on Tinytach, Hooty. I e-mailed them to make sure I get the proper model number. I'll order tomorrow. That would sure beat the handheld tach when I'm out alone with the helm lashed at 32 mph.

Thanks for the comments!

jim

I would STRONGLY suggest Champion plugs. I would use the (Q)L77JC4 if it were mine.

Good luck!

Re: 1984 60hp Evinrude performance

Good advice, folks! It's heartwarming to know there are experts out there to help.

I e-mailed tinytach to make sure I ordered the right model. Paraphrased Q&A...
I need a Tinytach for my 1984 Evinrude 2-cylinder 2-stroke outboard (no reset).
The model to purchase is the 1C-NR wrap the red wire 3 times on each spark plug wire, The tach will be looking for 2 pulse/rev and will need both signals. Note: the papers only discribe wrapping on one plug wire.
Ordered it this evening, Hooty . Strange for an internet vendor to ship before being paid!

I'll get the Champion plugs tomorrow. I suppose I'll try the QL77JC4 for 10 hours or so, Dhadley, and see if they're still wet.

Thanks again for the advice!

jim
