OK here's my problem. I have an 1984 60hp johnson. Last week I started the motor and it started just fine. While I was letting it warm up it lost the lower cylinder. I changed plugs thinking it was a fouled plug, no luck. I pulled the boat out and stuppid me with out even checking for spark I replaced both ignition coils. I still have the same problem, great spark on both plugs, but no fire on the lower. Could the carb for this cylinder be so plugged that no fuel would get through. That's the next direction I was going to head, any help would be great.

Sounds like you are on the right track, B1F.

Get a spray bottle and spray some fuel mix in the lower carb throat and see what happens.

If the lower cyl jumps in for a few secs, overhaul the bottom carb.

Good luck. :)

If you suspect that the lower cylinder carb is fouled and not delivering fuel, bare in mind that it is also not delivering oil as well.As easy as it is to remove and clean and or rebuild the carburetors on that engine ,it is my recomendation that you don't run the engine until you are certain that each carb is delivering fuel mix. Those pistons are stroking 32 times per second at 1000 rpm and without adequate oil mix ,scoring will take place in short order if it hasn't already.A compression test would also be in order.Good luck.

Remember the basics, Compression/leakdown, Spark, Fuel/Air. You say you have spark. Does it jump a half inch gap, blue in color? Hows compression? If good then go to carbs. If you clean out the bottom carb, clean out the top as well.

Thanks for all the help. I removed the lower carb yesterday and sure enough the float valve [not sure if that's the corect name]was stuck closed. I cleaned the carb and reassembled. That problem solved, but now knowing that I did run the motor even though it was only a short while, I will that the advice and do a compression check and clean the top carb. This motor's been to good to me to not give her the attention she's earned. Thanks again.
