Good evening,

Last fall I purchased an 84 70hp evinrude. And to be honest, I'm having a little trouble sleeping. I have read a few threads about the exhaust baffle warping on these motors. So to curb my insomnia, I decided to tear it down to verify whether or not I need to replace the baffle. One of the clues to the possibility of the bad baffle is the middle spark plug appeared "washed" after running it on muffs. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and the wife gave me the go ahead to invest more into this motor.

I believe I have removed all necessary fasteners to lift the power head, but I cannot seem to get it to pop loose. Now just to be clear, I haven't pried on it very hard. I recall seeing a couple of bolt heads way up inside the exhaust housing while I was changing the water pump impeller.

My question is, do those bolts have to come out in order to remove the power head? The manual does not mention the removal of the lower unit in order to remove the power head, and I cannot tell from the exploded parts diagram if those bolts are what's holding me up.

So that's why I'm here asking the pros.

Thanks for any help
Matt

There is one nut under the cylinder head.--No bolts inside the exhaust housing need to come out.

Thanks for the reply.
I got the nut in the rear center. And the three on each side of the exhaust adapter. Also the two rubber mounts each side in the front.

Sounds like I'll just have to put a little more pressure on it. I just feel better getting a second opinion.
