Anybody know if diode/rectifier on a 1984 75 Hp Evinrude (3 cyl) is supposed to be mounted directly to the mount holes on the block or is there supposed to be some sort of insulating washers or plate behind it?
I'm asking cuz my engine quit charging this weekend & when I got home the diode was shot. Stator tested fine (and only a yr old), battery came right back up. Mechanic said the older ones were prone to heat failure and that's why Eride moved it on later models. Engine was peeing much better than I can. (new impeller in the spring)
I replaced it last year when I replaced the stator & it's been fine. I don't remember anything being behind the original one. Any ideas?
