1984 75hp Merc, how can I access gears in lower unit?

Hello all.

This past fall, reverse failed to work on my motor. Forward and neutral still worked fine. I decided to remove the lower unit so that I may open it up and inspect the gears, as well as replace the seals, and redo the water pump since the lower unit was off also. I drained the oil form the lower unit, and it was cruddy looking, lots of filings, and also had signs of water in it as well. The oil was brown, rather than blue like it was when I filled it.

So my question is, how do I go about opening the lower unit to remove the prop shaft and everything else inside? Do I need some special tool(s) for it? Is there anything I should be aware of while I am doing this as well? I do have the Seloc manual for this motor as well.

I have had the lower unit at a local shop for 2 months now in the hopes that it would be ready over 3 weeks ago, but have found out today that it hasn't even been touched since I took it in. Needless to say I am not happy as fishing and boating seasons are starting now, and I am still stuck here on shore! :(

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi, to access the gears and remove the drive shaft you have to remove the propellar and start taking parts off form the prop end of the gear box. Once inside and you have the prop shaft out, the bearing carriers etc etc, then you can access the nut that retaines the drive shaft.
It is quite involved, I SUGGEST YOU GET A REPAIR MANUAL FISRT BEFORE YOU TRY PULLING STUFF APART!.
You will find there are shims etc that need to be refitted correctly etc.
