I can not get the rpms up on my boat I bought it used with a 19 pitch prop and bought a 15 pitch prop as it was not getting up to speed also had no tach. so I installed tach and prop but found that it was only getting up to 2400 rpms how do i adjust the linkage to increase throttle as the motor seems to run smooth. also to driveway test this can you use earmuffs and run it at full throttle. or should i take off prop and put motor in berrol. HELP ME

Re: 1984 85hp force rpms

We'll need some specifics, like what size and type of boat you have and whatnot. Never run an outboard without the prop. There must be a load on the engine, driveshaft, and lower unit, or you can damage something, and you just can't tell how its running unless the motor is seeing its intended load. They always run good in the driveway. There could be ignition or fuel flow issues at work here, or you could have a big prop trying to push a heavy load. Let us know.......

First thing to check is that all cylinders are getting spark. If not look for broken wire(s).

Re: 1984 85hp force rpms

its a 1984 16ft capri bayliner 85hp force it does need a tuneup as it sputters and dies at low rpms when cold but runs great at full(or what I thought was full rpms)rpms when warm. It didnt seem to get up and run when I bought it so my boat shop told me that a 19 prop was to tall and sold me a 13 1/2by15 prop and a tack and you say not to run with out a prop. can I put it in a berrol and test it at full throttle.

I think you should be running a 13pitch maybe a 15, you should never run the outboard wot with the earmuffs on. My manual say keep it under 2krpms.

Checked your compression/spark? Maybe it needs that tuneup really badly, or it's something else. Look at the throttle plates with the lever at WOT and see if they're horizontal. Your linkage is probably OK if the previous owner didn't dink with it.

Re: 1984 85hp force rpms

I had this problem with my 1991 - 90 HP Force and it was a broken wire to the # 2 Coil that left me with no spark (it ran good at WOT just not fast and only hlf of the original RPM's).

Re: 1984 85hp force rpms

Thanks for all the info. I checked the carb and it was only opening up about 1//2 to 3/4 of the way. I adjusted the linkage so they were level and I will see when I can get it in the lake as it is closed due to the terrorists scare. I also bought a manual for the force motors to help me tune it. First time owning a boat and loving it. also is it ok to use carb cleaner to clean the carbs while it is running.
