1984 aq125 volvo pinta no fire

a friend of my has a volvo penta he's ready to give up.first the starter relay keeps go out,now it has no fire he had it in the shop for a week and could not figure out what was wrong. then it started working ran it the whole day starting and stopping. 5 minutes from the launch he stop to fish and it never started sense. put new points,distributor,cap,rotor,coil and relay still no fire. the coil gets 12volt but when you leave the key on it get way to hot. any tips as to why the coil get so hot or no fire from the coil.

If you leave the key on when the engine is at a spot in the rotation where the points are closed in the distributor then the coil will get hot very fast.

If there is a tachometer wire hooked to the coil negative terminal, probably a grey wire, unhook it leaving the black wire that comes from the distributor hooked up and see if that changes anything.

If still not start then try to check the voltage at the coil positive terminal while it is cranking.

You must make sure you have a resistor which will "back up" the voltage from the coil you will pit the points beleve me it does not take much if you are out on the water you should have a back up set of points
