Boat ran fine until I went to take it out last week and it wouldn't start. Plenty of fuel flow. Wasn't getting any spark by pulling a plug and grounding it. Pulled coil wire and held it about 1/8-1/4" from a clean ground and I have a very weak spark coming from the coil wire to the distributor. Voltage to the coil was good(points open and closed). Pulled the coil and checked resistance between the terminals = 2.1. Resistance from the tower the the neg. terminal = 12K. Do I need a new coil?

Did some forum searches but I could still use some help.

Thanks! Troy

Weak spark may not be the coil's fault, the dwell (controlled by the points setting and condition) is what controls how much spark gets built up and when it gets released. Checking the condition of the points and the actual dwell would be first on my list.

It should be 3 ohms or more, unless you have an external ballast resistor.

I recently went to the local auto-part store to get a coil, no surprise that they don't carry a volvo coil. Just pulled a standard GM coil off the shelf (actually stamped on it "do not use external resistor") double checked it with a meter and it's perfect. Not bad for 20 bucks.

The original schematic shows a resistor, I'd check other parts closer.

I have an Accel super stock coil on my AQ125. (The chrome one). Works fantastic, however I also have the electronic ignition in there. Really solved a crappy acceleration problem for me.
