Hello,

I wanted to post my progress on my restoration of my 1984 Cimmeron fish/ski combo. I inherited this project from my Father-in-Law. He lost interest, so woo hoo for me and my family!

Little info on the boat.

1984 Cimmeron fish/ski combo
70 hp Johnson with Power trim
"Supposedly" $800.00 worth of work done to the "foot" of the outboard about 4 years ago.
Really nice floor plan.
Rotton stringers, deck, and transom.

In other words, the boat needs a total wood replacement.

Otherwise in Good Shape! LOL.

Before the tear down, I made sure that the outboard turned over. I expect the carbs to need rebult, etc etc.

No built in fuel tank.. woo hoo!!

Oh and It needs new batteries. LOL

So, enough of me jabbering, here are a few pics :) I am sorry if these pics are to huge. I couldn't figure out how to resize them...

Here is the boat before the restoration started

Taking off the rub rail

Yup, my little guy wants to be involved in everything!!!!

After picking up the outboard off of the transom and safely storing it, drilling out many many rivets, and sliding 2x4's between the top shell and the bottom hull, I decided I needed to put things into perspective. Me and my boys and our dog loaded up in the Canoe and hit the lake for some fishing. Ahh yeah, thats what this restoration is all about. More room for me and the boys, and less sore muscles. LOL.

Ok, finally got the hull halves separated. I re-purposed my boys little used playset, made of 4x4 and 6x6 beams as a lift. Some heavy duty ratchet straps and Whola, the bottom hull is free.

Here is a pic of the bow. As you can see, my FIL tried to replace the stringers with.. umm.. less than desirable results. All of this is coming out and will be put back right.

Now the only thing left to do is... everything. LOL!!!!!

Now for a few questions.

I know that all wood that I put back in this boat needs to be covered in fiberglass and rosin. Is it OK to use the supplies from Lowes? Or do I need a special marine grade type fiberglass and rosin?

Also, Are the stringers and transom simply glassed in after I coat them in fiberglass?

Sorry I am a complete newbie to boat restoration. All I know is that this will be done and I am ready to learn it all.

Thanks!

Welcome to iBoats!

Do NOT use the Lowes stuff. Check out www.uscomposites.com for your supplies. 435 Resin (not rosin) and you will need to start with about 5 gallons 10 yards of csm mat, and 10 yds of 1708 biax cloth. You can use AC Fir Exterior Grade plywood for your wood. Get THAT at Lowe's. You will also need to remove that steel tread plate off the back of the transom and see what is under there. Measure the thickness of the transom so you can duplicte it when you replace it. I suspect you will need to replace the entire transom as well. I recommend you do an advanced search on the forum and use Transom Replacement as your key words and then do a LOT of Reading. A LOT!!! You will learn everything you need to know. We will all be here for you to guide you every step of the way.

First thing to buy is a quality respirator! The fiberglass dust when you grind all that out is nasty stuff! And there will be a lot of it...
It will be very expensive buying resin and glass in small quantities. You will need a good bit of it. I redid stringers, deck, and transom on my trihull runabout and used 6-7 gallons of resin and many many yards of various cloths. 1708 biaxial cloth is strong, fairly easy to work with stuff and you'll need some mat also.

www.uscomposites.com is a good source for fiberglass supplies, buy resin in 5gal. quantities....much cheaper.
Good luck with your restoration!

Thank you for replying so quickly! I'm excited and I will read up on everything I can on the transom replacement. I hope, this time next year, I will have enough expertise to help someone else here too.

Just reading up on some other threads here I found a new term.. "Tabbing".. LOL, this is just an example. I have so much to learn. I am itching to get this boat in the water, but I want to do a quality job that I can be proud of.

I do have a question about electronics. I left the wiring attached to the upper shell. I figured that I could go through the electronics, replace the wiring etc with the shell separated so that the reinstall goes much smoother.

I have found that there is no "fuse box" per say with this boat. There are a lot of inline fuses and it seems that everything runs straight off the battery. Does this sound normal? The way the wiring looked to me. The outboard was wired to the cranking battery, and everything else to the deep cell !? (actually the person had everything hooked to the deep cell, I am guessing that it should be outboard to cranking and everything else to deep cell.)

Thanks!

Yeah, I ran across a thread that talked about "tabbing" the stringers to the hull and "tabbing" the transom to the hull. I think it just means glassing the stringer/transom to the hull.

Others have wired up the "cap" while it was off the boat. I would add a marine fuse block like this http://www.iboats.com/Blue-Sea-Fuse-Blocks/dm/*******.047950156--**********.127294446--view_id.6115 instead of all the in-line fuses. I plan on adding that one to my boat also. Having a starting battery and a deep cell battery with all the accessories running off the deep cell is common practice.
