I have just put about 60 hrs on my 100 hp V4 "Commercial" It has been rebuilt with new pistons, drive shaft, power packs etc.........All necessary repairs were done and the results are fantastic! It has been broken in correctly with 25/1 evinrude xd30 for the first 15 hrs at varying speeds. My understanding is that it being a "Commercial" it has a V6 gear case and other parts, (Stainless Steel?). It is on my restored 1978 19' open bow "Manatee" I am amazed at the power this 100 hp puts out........I can go from o-30 mph in about 6 seconds......No hesitation.....Just blasts out of the hole.......Have to catch my cooler as it rips past me after throttle up! Can anyone explain the details of this V6 gearcase and why this is makes a difference on a V4 engine. I believe I have a 17" pitch prop. Couldn't be happier! Also is there a maintennance schedule I should follow? Don't want this one to die........

Thanks,

Don in Virginia

It's not a true V6 gearcase. It's the size of a V6 but the ratio is different and there are some internal differences. It (obviously) takes a V6 prop. Because of the larger diameter prop you'll be able to mount the motor higher than if it had a V4 case & prop and gain efficiency.

Just make sure it's propped out correctly and use fresh 87 octane, good oil (you are) and Champion plugs. It'll serve you well.

that is a fantastic set up, perfect motor for the hull. the manatee is a take off of the cobia hull, way back when. that 84 is not an old motor. proper care, your grands will be using it.

HookMaster,
Very nice rig! I have had a similar experience this summer with a very similar set-up. I rebuilt a 1976 Starcraft American 18-footer, and a 1984 Johnson 90hp to run on it. I, too, did the full break-in procedure with lots of oil for the first half-dozen tanks. So far we've put about 30 hours on ours without any issues (save for an overheating problem in the first 15-minutes).

Re: 1984 Evinerude

Thanks to all for your replies...........Will be out fishing today! I assume the prop is correct as my repair shop made no comments......How do I determine the right set up? Runs like a top right now so?......... The only thing with the Manatee is lack of storage space for gear. I can only fit a 15 Gal tank in the rear and carry a 12 Gal spare. I may decide to have a custom tank made but so far I have had plenty of fuel for what I need, about 12 - 15 gals a day.....

Chinewalker..Looks like you may have put in more hours than I did!!

Re: 1984 Evinerude

Hi Don,
I run a 15-inch pitch prop on mine as the 17 was a tad too much. Ideally you want to be able to spin your motor up to just the far side of 5500 RPM. I was taching at about 5200-5300 with the 17, but I can get about 5700 with the 15. This is with a light load and running full tilt boogie mode. I was borderline with the 17, which I keep as a spare under the seat. What you don't want is something less than 5000 RPM, as then you are loading up the engine too much. Akin to driving uphill, towing a trailer, in overdrive. Buy, beg or borrow a tach and get your baseline and go from there...

I have a tach installed that I need to find out why it is not working. I have wired it according to my repair shop. It is set on 6P (Six Pulse) as directed. The instructions said it should be set on 4 for a 4 cyl? See the picture. It is connected properly the the wireing harness off the the new throttle control. I would believe I am getting at least 5M rpm from the sound of it at WOT.

Any suggestions on the tach set up?

Don
