I was running at full throtle when I heard a loud whining noise coming from the motor. I immediately shut down the motor. I then restarted the motor and tried to shift and nothing, no forward or reverse it didnt even sound like it was trying to engage. I'm sure I didnt hit anything and the lower unit oil was clean, no water or shavings. I was told by the repair shop that they think it may be a sheared drive shaft that the 90's and 115's were notorious for broken driveshafts. I was hoping someone hear may have some insight.

If it's not a broken driveshaft, it's possible that the splines at the top are worn. Had it happen to a '84 90hp a couple years ago... Dhadley's test will tell you...
- Scott

Yes, Its pumping water just fine. The mechanic said that it was common for the driveshaft to break right before the waterpump.

Well, the good news is that the crank splines are probably OK.

I'm assuming the crank splines are located at the bottom of the powerhead. So am I to assume that the mechanic is probably right in that the drive shaft is most likely the problem?

Yes, the crankshaft splines are at the base of the powerhead. The fact that you're pumping water eliminates my theory and makes the broken below the pump theory the more likely one...
- Scott

From what I have read here on Iboats it is starting to sound like I have a broken pinion gear. The mechanic has not called me yet to tell me what he has found. If it is in fact the Pinion gear, What kind of cost is involved in replacing it?
