I have had a problem that yesterday i found to be my motor running on only 2 cylinders right bank came in and out and died completely past 1/4 throttle, i switch powerpacks from 1 side to the other now the left bank runs terriable and the right runs as it should. Before i spend $110.94 is the powerpack my problem?

If all you did was switch the pack and the problem followed, I would say you have a defective pack.

That's why the older engines (with the twin packs) are easy to troubleshoot.

Re: 1984 evinrude 115

The problem follows the brand new powerpack as well, ITS STILL NOT FIXED. I switched them again and the problem followed the new powerpack over to the other bank, its beyond me, i doubt the new powerpack is junk out of the box?? Any other ideas on what i should be checking?.
so far
Carbs cleaned
new coils wires plugs
1 new power pack
Thanx!

inductive timing light, but you can feel, hear and tell when the cylinders cut in/out. they cut out as you gas up and it runs on 2, which ever side the older but properly working power pack is on, then as you pull back throttle you here them all kick in again and all cylinders run @ idle. Its getting annoying but im gonna fix this thing one way or another so any help is greatly appreciated!

Check your stator for correct voltage output. See the ignition section in the factory manual. On the 86 models it calls for stator voltage output right at 150 volts, as measured with a special peak-reading voltmeter. If it's output is less, it may not fire all the plugs properly all the time.

While you have the flywheel off, you might want to check that it is the correct one. 1978 and newer V4 flywheels should have "CD4" stamped between the magnets and the hub.

I ended up brining it back to the dealer who couldnt solve the problem in the first place after i had figured out what was going on with the cylinders cutting in and out for them, glutan for punishment i guess, if they actually fix it i'll post what it was that was going wrong.
Ezeke I see you are from cape cod so am i, maybe you can fix my boat for profit if they can't?

That would be interesting. PM when you find out what they say. I'm not in this for profit.

Re: 1984 evinrude 115

ok so the dealer says that its my timer base that needs to be replaced. $300 part. Would this be why all four cylinders run in neutral but only 2 run in gear? They already got me once with coils & wires and 2 carbs cleaned and never fixed the problem so im nervous to put another $500 into it and still not have the problem fixed. Thank you

I'd be inclined to go with the dealer's opinion. After all, he is the one that will be providing a warranty on his repairs.
