Hello gentlemen,

I am new here and need some expert advice. I just came into possesion of a 1975 Ranger tournament hull bass boat with a 1984 Evinrude 140 V4. The boat is a fixer upper and will need lots of work.
I have searched for hours on here and cant seem to find a thread on a problem I am having with the power tilt/trim. I found a few posts that are similar, but dont seem to pertain to this motor.
When I picked the boat up the power tilt work fine. When I got it home it worked fine. But yesterday I tilted it ALL the way down and it seems like it is locked down some how. I cannot seem to find where the reverse lock release is located on this motor. I have the parts manual, but where it says reverse lock mechanism, it specifies for manual tilt only. The lift motor sounds like it is working but the motor just wont go up. When I try to pull it up it feels like it is locked. I even tried using a jack to push it up and I think the transom would have cracked before the motor went up. I have not found a service manual yet for this engine, but this is driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

look on the starboard (right) transom bracket toward the bottom.
there is a hole.
it is a manual release.......only turn it 1-1.5 turns and it will release.
after you release it you can raise the motor manually----put it on the safety latch.
now you can check/fill the fluid..........transmission fluid will work.

Well, That was it. Thanks David! I started to turn that yesterday but some fluid came out and I talked myself out of it. I really appreciate the help. I dont have any transmission fluid laying around, but I do have some hydrolic jack oil that I use in my floor jack. Will that work or should I just get some transmission fluid?

Thanks again!
