I have a Evinrude 40 horse rope start tiller on my 16 foot Alumacraft,....

In the past I have looked at trying to add electric start because I hate having to pull the rope,...

I have tried looking at some online manuals to determine what I would need and the cost, It would be a do it yourself project,.....

Is it just the starter and alternator???

I also noticed many of the parts on my 40 are the same as the same year 60 horse,...Is my 40 horse a 60 horse in disguise???

Is it doable to make the mods to up the horsepower or would that become cost prohibitive???

Re: 1984 Evinrude 40 horse ???

Let's start with the HP question. Though they are basically the same engine and share many of the same parts they are not the same. Many internal changes, carbs, reed valves, cylinder head, and I believe the exhaust tube is different.

As to the swap to electric start it can be done but I find it may be easiest and cheapest to find a junked donor motor to cannablize as there are many things to add. Starter, bracket, starter solinoid, wiring. I don't know if the manual start models come with the harness with the red connection plug for the ignition switch or not.

The problem with this is these donor motors are in short supply here in Wisconsin. I know because I've been watching graigslist all winter for one. Though there is a guy in Beaver Dam that may have what you need.

Thanks,........

I was hoping it would be an easy thing to do, And maybe get a little more get up and go out of it,...

Not long ago I saw one on clist in Amery,WI,...........

I'll probably end up leaving it be and just move into a bigger boat in a year or two,........

Adding a starter isn't difficult and would only take a few hours at most if all the parts are there. Thing is that a good starter motor can cost you as much as a whole junked engine. One of the other nice things about it is that compatablitiy thing again. I do believe that the starter and bracket is the same part used on the 40, 50, 55 and 60hp from 1974 on up for both the Johnson and Evinrude.

Just for an idea as how scarce a good runner is I just recently drove 6 hours round trip from western Kenosha Co. to Dubuque Ia. to buy a really nice 1983 60hp. I was worth the trip!

I know it wouldn't be to hard and I want to do it,...

BUT,........

If I keep thinking about moving up to the 18-20 foot boat in the future,...

I passed on a running 84 60 horse tiller a couple of years ago and kick myself for it still,....At least it would look period correct on the Alumacraft,..........
