1984 Force 85 won't go above idle

For starters I have never run this motor. When I bought it it had a melted piston in #2 cylinder. I replaced the piston and found the cause which was pieces of foam stuck in the reed valve. I checked the carb jets and they appeared as new. The previous owner may have tried some desperate attempts to correct a high speed idle and may have changed linkage connections. When I push the throttle forward to put it in gear, the shift linkage moves and the throttle cable moves but it doesn't seem to do anything to the carb linkage. It does appear to turn the linkage that goes up under the flywheel (timing I assume). If I push the lever forward nothing changes until I get to max throttle then the motor stalls. The motor will idle in neutral at 1500 and drops to about 1000 when in gear. I am going to change the spark plugs for starters since I just burned a tank of 25/1 mix to seat the rings.
Any ideas on where to go next?

You really ought to rig the carbs and stator timing first to determine that you have everything hooked up correctly.

There really is no way to advise you without having a baseline setting.

If you haven't got a Clymer manual yet, I suggest that you get one.

Upon further investigation...
I only had spark on the top cylinder. If I swap the 4 wire connectors from the CDI boxes I get spark on the bottom cylinder. If I swap the 2 wire connectors I get backfire. Why they were made interchangeable is beyond me. It seems that some combination of these connectors is correct. Does anyone know know how to confirm the correct connections without this trial and error method? Next backfire could be the end:eek:

Re: 1984 Force 85 won't go above idle

Since my good cylinder seems to move from 1 to 3 depending on which CDI is triggered the problem must be with the stator
The only manual I have is a Seloc. I don't find it much help with this but this website has some useful information: http://cdielectronics.com/Downloads/tabid/55/language/en-US/Default.asp

I have access to a parts motor which is already partly stripped so I will attempt flywheel removal to access the stator and try swapping units. The parts motor is a 1985 and the wire colours are different from my 1984 model. The CDI boxes and coils are identical. Do I need to keep the flywheel and stator pairs together or can I put my original flywheel back on with the other stator?

Well I replaced the stator and trigger assembly and replaced the original fly wheel. Now no spark on any cylinder. Humm I must have done something wrong. Just for the Hell of it I swap the CDI and coil packs that were with the scrap engine. Success! :D Now the engine starts at the touch of the key and the idle seems to respond nicely. I will have to inspect the components to try and isolate the problem so I only keep the good stuff.
