I have a 1984 Johnson 115 hp crossflow V4 that runs strong at speed, accelerates without hesitation, BUT refuses to idle either in gear or in neutral for more than about 10-15 seconds. After it dies, it usually requires the warm up lever and choke to get it going again. This is annoying for pulling a skier/wakeboarder, and challenging for docking.
I have noted that if the engine is tilted up beyond the trim range but with the lower unit still in the water, it idles a bit better/longer, but will almost certainly die when tilted back down.
The throttle plate and cam appear to be properly aligned. Also VRO long since disconnected and removed; this motor is burning 50:1.
