1984 Johnson 25HP gearcase oil is green?

I was talking to a friend about the boat I bought a few weeks ago and mentioned that when I bought it when I checked the gear case oil it was a green color. He said that doesn't sound right? I ran it today before I talked to him and it shifted fine and ran great besides being a little on the rich side "a lot of black/watery mix coming out water holes" and so I checked the gear oil again to make sure that it still green and wasn't mixed with water and it was indeed still a bright green color.

Is the green a certain kind of gear oil? I know how to change it so if I need to I will but wanted to make sure the green stuff is okay and if not I'll change it right away.

green is ok. as long as its not water and algae!! lol

It was a thick green oil. At first there was a TINY bit of water in it (just a few clear watery looking drops mixed in the green and the drops were a little bigger than a grain of salt" and I put the plug back in and then I took it out again and it was thick bright green with no waterish looking in it.

The gear lube was probably recently changed before you bought it. Blue and yellow mixed together makes green. Both are popular colors for gear lube.

Also, be sure to replace the fill/drain plug washers with new ones. They are one time use.

Mercury High Performance gear lube is green. (their best gear lube.)

Sounds normal to me. Just don't foget about replacing the drain plug gaskets.
