Hi, I have a 1984 Johnson 30HP, I have removed the lower unit and want to replace the water pump. I was able to remove the drive shaft but the water pump housing is not able to be removed because the shift rod has a nut that will not pass through a hole in the water pump housing. I also cannot exam the water inlet tube becuase it is attached to the housing. This lower unit has a rectangle opening where the shift rod attaches to the rod in lower unit.
I cannot found a manual to download online (i will even pay) to figure out how to remove the shift rod. It seems to be attached somewhere at the top of the leg just below the cowl latch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...I am trying to get out on the water this weekend!!:confused:

The shift rod connects to the handle up under the powerhead. You can't disconnect it here without taking the powerhead off. I'm not sure down below- there is a way, but I haven't gotten that far with mine yet. Someone more knowledgeable will come along.

It makes it almost impossible to hold the water pump housing, line up water line, push in drive shaft and hold impellar and key all at the same time while trying to get the water pump bolts back in!!
I know there has to be an easier way to do this. The last time I put it all back together I didnt get the water line in place and couldn't figure out why it wasnt peeing!

Also, does anyone know if the copper water line can be removed from the water pump house. There is a rubber grommet that has 2 pegs sticking throung the housing, maybe these can be pushed in and the water line pulled out? I didnt want to pull to hard if it was not supposed to come out.

I believe the shift rod removal on the 84,you have to take off the water intake screens on the lower unit, you will need two wrenches for the connection.Do not turn the lower nut, only the top one.Once the upper nut is disconnected, slide it up the shaft and remove the plastic retainer(there will be a split in it).Remove, I believe 5 bolts, may have to shake it up and down while pulling at the same time, but it should come.
The water tube, if stuck I will try to twist it, if it is stuck in the water pump housing.Just do it gently not to torque it, if not try pulling up gently.Still no results spray some wd40,let it soak awhile and try again.
If turned the bottom nut on the shaft when removing, you will have to thread it back up again or when reinstalling,it may not shift into forward again. So before putting the water intake screens back on make sure it will go into forward gear.Hope this helps
