1984 Mariner 115 hp question on lower unit

i just got my motor running. it is sitting in my driveway with a water hose for cooling it. when going into gear rather forwards or reverse. there is a small amount of grinding when putting it into gear. i am not sure if this is normal or not. it isnt bad, in the water you might not hear it as much,.

Put this in the mercury outboard section you will get better answers.

Sounds like the common mistake of easing it into gear.---Don't do that.--Move the lever with a quick firm motion !
