Carburator pickup timing conflicts.
6 degrees ATDC per a stick-on label on the front of the engine
4-6 BTDC per my Seloc manual
On Iboats forums I get the following
4-6 degrees ATDC - NOT BEFORE TDC per Thom who provided a set of 5 pictues with words to describe the whole timing procedure.
3-4 degrees BTDC per Clams
6 degrees ATDC from Mercury Manual per Arsenalpsu
Whow! Am I confused.
All of this information leaves me with adjustments from 4 degrees BTDC to 6 degrees ATDC
I have wondered if the timing is different depending on whether the Idle Stablizer has been removed.
Help and thanks for any information about all this conflicting information.

If you have a decal on the motor and
a mercury manual that say the same
timing I think that's where I'd set it.

The stablizer has to be removed or disconnected(I perfer trash can) to set timing correctly. What it actually does is advance timing if it falls under 600rpm to keep engine from stalling and dieing. When rpm increases it returns to a normal timing setting. The correct settings for your motor are:
5?ATDC throttle pickup timing, 20?BTDC static timing(max), 18? BTDC running timing at WOT. You dont have a idle timing spec as it has the stablizer, but if it is removed you should see it in the 1?-4?ATDC range but dont worry about it as long as pickup timing is set correctly.....

Save confusion and get correct MERC manual for your serial#.I'd throw the seloc in the bin.

Just an interesting tidbit. I have set the pickup at 6 BTDC and at 6 ATDC and it ran and idled on the muffs both ways. Will set as Pappy says and put it in the lake and see what happens.
Thanks a bunch

You realize that Fazt gave you the correct info? The BTDC spec is for the distributor ignitions on the pre-1979 Merc inline sixes.
