1984 Merc 4cyl 2cyc. 75 Hp WOT great! Idle Great! Put into gear..... quits

1984 Mercury 75hp 4Cyl. 2 Cycle Serial # 6559253.
Ended last season like this... WOT runs just fine. Idles forever smooth as silk.
Try and drop it into gear and it just quits. You have to keep restarting over and over and try to quickly slam it into gear to get underway. Any help would be much appreciated.

Normally when a piece of power equipment goes to sleep in the fall running well and wakes up in the spring running but running poorly the first thing I think of is a gummed carburetor.

It started doing this late summer and just got worse. Any help appreciated.

Having the same symptoms with my 64 Merc 850. The few people I talked to at the marina also said that its likely dirty carb or fuel pump issue.

Not likely a fuel pump issue if it runs fine at WOT. Sounds starved for fuel. Clean the carbs.
